NEW DELHI: Delhi airport operator DIAL expects to commission the expanded Terminal 1 (T1) this month and is also working on increasing capacity for international traffic, a top executive said on Friday.

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital currently has an annual capacity to handle 100 to 105 million passengers and an international passenger capacity of around 22 million.

DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said, "We are expecting T1 to be operational during this month itself... We will gradually shift from T2 to T1."

The expanded T1 was inaugurated in March this year.

Operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), this airport has three terminals --- T1, T2 and T3.Speaking on the sidelines of the CAPA India Aviation Summit 2024 here, Jaipuriar said the airport saw about 20 million international passenger traffic last year.

“We have a capacity of 22 million and it is only 10 per cent headroom. I need to increase that capacity because we expect the growth to be at least 8-10 per cent.

“We have to stay ahead and we are looking at different options,” he said. He said that making T2 an international terminal is also one of the options. The operator is looking to increase international passenger capacity by more than 40 percent.

Currently, there are around 1,500 slots per day at the airport and DIAL is working on plans to increase this number to 500-700.

DIAL, which is a consortium led by GMR Group, is working on a 10-year master plan, which will be prepared after discussions with airlines and other stakeholders.

“Master plans are usually long term, looking at what traffic will be like over the next ten years and based on that, looking at what facilities are needed to support that growth,” he said. "

Air India and IndiGo have placed large orders for aircraft, including wide-body aircraft, and efforts are underway to develop an international aviation hub in the country.
