Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Excise Department has issued instructions to strengthen surveillance around schools in the state to prevent the spread and use of drugs.

The instructions were issued on Saturday in a meeting of district level and above officials chaired by state Excise Minister MB Rajesh.

Rajesh said that since schools are in session, strict vigilance and special monitoring should be ensured.

The minister said, "Special efforts should be made to prevent the spread and use of drugs. Better monitoring should be implemented in all educational institutions including schools. Women officers should be appointed to monitor schools and if necessary So a special squad can be formed." This was said in a release issued by the department

The Minister also suggested that women excise officers be given special training for this purpose.

Instructions were issued to increase surveillance of shops within the school premises.

In view of the recent hooch tragedy in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu, the meeting also decided that special measures should be taken in Kerala also to prevent such incidents.

"Special attention should be given to the districts bordering neighboring states. A district-level special team should be formed to tighten inspections. Efforts to prevent the spread of drugs and illicit liquor will be strengthened," the release said. Should be done."
