Kolkata: Eastern Railway saved electrical energy worth over Rs 12 crore in the first quarter of 2024-25 by using comprehensive measures to save traction and non-traction energy, an official said on Monday.

He said that through regeneration of energy by three-phase engines, the Kolkata-headquartered ER saved 1,09,84,814 units of energy, which is a saving of about Rs 8.06 crore in the first quarter of the current financial year.

ER spokesperson Kaushik Mitra said comprehensive measures to reduce traction and non-traction energy usage led to reduction in carbon footprint and electrical energy savings of over Rs 12 crore in the first quarter of financial year 2024-25.

"In June 2024 alone, regeneration in 51 three-phase locos resulted in energy savings of 25,83,640 units, which is a saving of approximately Rs 1.94 crore in the energy bill for the month," he said.

He said that the steps taken by Zonal Railways have reduced the consumption of fossil fuels thereby promoting sustainable development.

"These efforts contribute to substantial cost savings and also align with the broader goal of reducing fossil fuel dependence," he said.

Additionally, ER saved over Rs 77 lakh due to better power factor and other rebates for non-traction energy bills from April to May this financial year, Mitra said.

He said that forced shutdown of 874 diesel engines when not in use resulted in significant savings of high-speed diesel worth Rs 3.32 crore.
