“I am glad that the Honorable Speaker strongly condemned the Emergency, highlighted the excesses committed during it and also mentioned the manner in which democracy was strangled. Standing silently in respect of all those who suffered in those days was also a wonderful gesture,” PM Modi said.

Om Birla, in his maiden speech in the 18th Lok Sabha, referred to the 'dark days' of the Emergency and also called for 2-minute silence on the 'dark chapter' of Indian democracy, triggering protests by opposition parties.

Notably, June 25, 2024 was the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed during the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government. Over a long period of 21 months, the basic rights and freedoms of the citizens were taken away and the Constitution was trampled upon.

PM Modi underlined the need to tell today's new generation about those 'dark days' so that they can understand 'what dictatorship looks like'.

“Emergency was imposed 50 years ago, but it is important for today's youth to know about it because it is an apt example of what happens when the Constitution is trampled, public opinion suppressed and institutions destroyed So what happens? The incidents during the Emergency are an example of what dictatorship is like,” PM Modi further said on X.
