In a post on X, the billionaire said that unfortunately, "the trip to India was delayed due to very heavy Tesla obligations."

"But I'm very much looking forward to it coming later this year," Musk said.

Last week, the billionaire had tweeted that he was looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The SpaceX CEO was also scheduled to meet representatives of the Indian space company during his visit to India.

Musk has held an important conference call with analysts about Tesla's latest quarter (the first quarter results, after the company cut its workforce by 10 percent globally, or about 14,000 employees).

Layoffs at Tesla "destroyed some departments by as much as 20 percent and affected even high performers," and the decision was apparently taken "due to poor financial performance."

Drew Baglino, Tesla's vice president of public policy and business development and SVP of powertrain and energy, has also stepped down.

Tesla has shelved plans to develop a low-cost EV for around $25,000.
