New Delhi, Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Monday made a case for self-meter reading and bill generation through mobile applications for electricity consumers.

According to a statement from the power ministry, Khattar made the suggestion during a review in Itanagar on power sector schemes and projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

It said the minister has suggested providing consumers the option of self-meter reading once every two months and bill generation through a mobile app.

Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Energy Secretary Pankaj Aggarwal were also present in the meeting.

In his address, the Minister said, “The Central Government is making continuous efforts for the overall progress of the north-eastern region of the country. In the last decade, the Central Government has been extremely sensitive to the needs of the region and has been working for better connectivity, improved infrastructure and welfare of the people."

He said Arunachal Pradesh has about 38 per cent (about 50 GW) of India's total hydropower potential, the highest among all states.

The ministry statement said availability of compensatory afforestation land was also discussed as it is important for early development of hydropower projects in the state.

It added that compensatory afforestation land could also be explored in other states.
