In Srinagar, National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir should be held on time to demonstrate the supremacy of security forces over terrorists, who have carried out a series of attacks in the Jammu region recently.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a party function here, Abdullah said there is no normality in the union territory.

"There is no normality. But is the situation worse than in 1996? If so, then don't hold elections. If you want to bow down to these powers that are attacking, then don't hold elections. If you have to demonstrate the supremacy of the militancy, instead of demonstrating the supremacy of our armed forces and police, then let's not hold elections," he said.

The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of J-K said that if the government has courage, then elections should be held.

"If you don't have the courage and you are afraid, then don't do it. But, if you have to show the supremacy of our police and our forces, if our rulers have some courage, then why should they bow down to these powers?" "Then elections should be held on time and the people of J-K should elect their own government," he added.

When asked about the BCCI's decision not to send a cricket team to Pakistan to play there, Abdullah said this is not something new.

"It has been many years since we saw a bilateral series in either country. It is the BCCI's own decision to send the team to play a tournament," he said.

The NC leader said that it is not the sole responsibility of our country to improve relations between the two countries.

"Pakistan's responsibility in improving relations is much greater, it must stop the attacks, the prevailing atmosphere must improve. Pakistan has to play its role in improving relations between the two countries," he added.

The Jammu region has been rocked by a series of ambushes and terrorist attacks, especially in the border districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Doda and Reasi.

To a question about the NEET exam, Abdullah said that a decision on the exam should be taken as soon as possible.

"It is a grave injustice to the future of youth. We hope that a decision will be made soon, whether through an investigation, a court or the government," he said.

North Carolina's vice president said the party would present a comprehensive package for women in its election manifesto.

Much remains to be done to give them a status in society and a stake in the development of J-K. “We are formulating a plan, a package for women in our manifesto,” he said.
