Gangtok, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday announced his decision to vacate the Soreng-Chakung assembly constituency and continue representing Renock seat.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha supremo was elected from two seats in the assembly elections. SKM swept the elections, winning 31 out of 32 constituencies.

In a Facebook post, Tamang said, "I apologize to the people of Soreng-Chakung constituency as I have decided to step aside by allowing an honest and loyal party functionary to serve you as your MLA."

The announcement came a day before the SKM supremo was bound to take a decision as per Section 67/A of the Conduct of Elections Rules 1961, which states that one of the two constituencies must be abandoned within 14 days of the declaration of results. will be.

"Tomorrow, June 15, is the last day of this decision. Therefore, with a heavy heart, I must make this important announcement today," said Tamang, the senior-most MLA serving in the Assembly for the seventh consecutive term.

Soreng-Chakung was represented in the previous assembly by Tamang's son Aditya.

Tamang's wife Krishna Kumari Rai resigned from the post of MLA of Namchi-Singhithang assembly constituency on Thursday, a day after taking oath. He had won this seat in the recently concluded assembly elections by defeating Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) candidate Bimal Rai.
