Xinhua news agency quoted Palestinian security sources as saying that Israeli planes on Wednesday bombed the 'Ibn al-Haytham' school, home to displaced people, in the Shujaiya neighborhood.

"Our teams recovered the bodies of eight victims, including five children and two women, as a result of Israeli airstrikes," Gaza Civil Defense said in a press statement.

Local sources and eyewitnesses said the airstrike caused extensive damage to school premises and classrooms.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said in a statement that its air force targeted Hamas militants at a command and control center in Gaza City, formerly known as the Ibn al-Haytham school.

Israel launched a massive offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas's incursion through the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage.

The death toll of Palestinians from ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza has risen to 41,272, Gaza-based health officials said in a statement on Wednesday.
