Eight people have been admitted to hospital after falling ill due to the scorching heat in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. A senior official gave this information on Saturday.

Public Health Department Director Niranjan Mishra said five people were admitted to hospitals due to excessive exposure to sunlight and heat in Angul district from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon, while one each in Khurda, Mayurbhanj and Sundergarh districts. The matter came to light.

However, no death has been reported so far due to heat wave.

He said hospital authorities across the state have been instructed to keep facilities ready to treat sunstroke patients.

He said, “Special beds and adequate medicines have also been kept ready in Primary Health Centers (PHCs), Community Health Centers (CHCs) and District Headquarters Hospitals (DHHs) for the treatment of sunstroke patients.,

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in the state rose above 43 degrees Celsius and 21 places recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Angul, the industrial town in central Odisha, was the hottest at 43.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Malkangiri (43.2) and Titlagarh and Boudh (both 43).

The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded maximum temperatures of 39.6 and 40.1 degrees Celsius respectively.

IMD estimates that there will be no major change in the maximum temperature in the next 24 hours and it may fall by two to four degrees Celsius in the next two days, after which there will be no major change.

It also issued a yellow warning (updated) predicting heat wave conditions at one or two places in Angul, Nayagarh, Bolangir, Malkangiri, Bhadrak, Gajapat and Boudh districts till Sunday.

Hot night conditions are likely at some places in Bolangir, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Malkangiri, the weather official said.However, IMD's Bhubaneswar center has also predicted thunderstorm and heavy rain over parts of Odisha in the next two days.

"Rain or squall with gusty wind and lightning is very likely over Odisha during the next two days," the IMD said in a bulletin.

According to the weather office, there will be hailstorm at one or two places in Angul, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur and Cuttack districts on April 7.

Similarly, heavy rainfall may occur at some places in Kandhamal, Ganjam and Kalahandi districts on April 8.

In view of the current heat wave situation in the state, the Office of the Special Relief Commissioner on Saturday asked the sports department to restrict outdoor sports activities from 11 am to 3 pm as a precautionary measure.

Earlier, the Labor Department had banned workers from doing labour-intensive work between 11 am and 3 pm.Khurda district administration also reduced school timings from 6.30 am to 10.30 am.
