New Delhi, Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on edtech firm Edu Tap Learning Solutions for misleading advertisements claiming that after taking its course, you will get 144 marks for RBI Grade B exam in 2023. The students were selected.

In an order issued on June 12, the CCPA directed Edu Tap to immediately stop the "impugned advertisement" from all electronic and print media. The company has been given 15 days to submit the compliance report.

The consumer watchdog found that advertisements on Edu Tap's YouTube and Telegram channels featured the names and photographs of 144 candidates selected for the prestigious RBI exam. However, it hid important details about what specific courses these candidates had taken from the platform.According to CCPA findings, 57 out of 144 candidates had only taken the 'Interview Guidance Course' offered free of cost by Edu Tap. This course is applicable after a candidate has passed the preliminary and main stages of RBI Grade B examination.

The CCPA order states that Edu Tap "intentionally concealed material information" about the type and duration of courses chosen by successful students in order to "mislead consumers as a class."

The regulator objected to Edu Tap using the RBI symbol in advertisements without permission to give a "sense of authenticity".

With approximately 2 to 2.5 lakh candidates appearing for the RBI Grade B examination annually, the CCPA underlined that “the vulnerability of the class of persons to be adversely affected by such misleading advertisements is huge.,

Edu Tap has a significant presence on YouTube with 3.59 lakh subscribers and around 15,000 paid users across platforms.

When contacted, the company did not immediately comment on the CCPA order.
