The action was taken after the Congress filed a complaint with the Election Commission alleging mismatch between actual and declared assets in the affidavit filed by Chandrashekhar.

Mismatch and falsification of any affidavit is dealt with under Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act 1951.

According to the law, concealing any information in the nomination form or affidavit can lead to imprisonment of up to six months or fine or both.
