MUMBAI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked parties to provide details about planes and helicopters being used for political campaigning, including their origin and destination and details of people on board.

The letter written by Tejas Samel, Deputy Election Officer of Mumbai Suburban District, dated April 12, states that such information has to be given to the District Election Office three days before the journey, but now this period has been reduced to 24 hours.

"We are sending a revised letter tomorrow (April 17). They will have to inform us 24 hours in advance instead of three days," Samel said on Tuesday night.

The details should also include the construction of the aircraft/helicopter and the people traveling in them.

The letter said that this information is to be given under the Model Code of Conduct applicable for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which is to be sent to the ECI.

Lok Sabha elections in 48-seat Maharashtra will be held in five phases between April 19 and May 20.
