New Delhi: The Election Commission on Tuesday directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to verify any mismatched details in the affidavits submitted by Union minister and BJP candidate from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat Rajiv Chandrashekhar. Sources gave this information.

The Congress had moved the Election Commission claiming mismatch in actual and declared assets in the affidavit filed by Chandrashekhar, who is again in the fray against former UN diplomat Shashi Tharoor.

Sources said that as per procedure, the Election Commission has directed the CBDT to verify any mismatched affidavit details submitted by Chandrashekhar.

He said any mismatch and falsification of the affidavit is dealt with under Section 125A of the Representation of the People Act 1951.

According to the law, concealing any information in the nomination form or affidavit can lead to imprisonment of up to six months or fine or both.
