The two met on the sidelines of the SCO meeting of the Council of Heads of State and discussed bilateral issues ranging from restoring peace on the border to rebuilding relations.

Agreeing that a prolonged continuation of the existing situation in the border areas is not in the interest of either side, the two Ministers had an "intensive exchange" of views on finding an early resolution of the outstanding issues along the Line of Actual Control . LAC in eastern Ladakh) to "stabilize and rebuild" bilateral relations, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar stressed the need for complete withdrawal of troops from the remaining areas in eastern Ladakh and doubling of efforts to restore peace on the border.

They also reaffirmed the importance of fully adhering to relevant bilateral agreements, protocols and understandings reached between the two Governments in the past. The External Affairs Minister said that the Line of Actual Control should be respected and peace should always be maintained in the border areas.

To resolve the remaining issues as quickly as possible, the leaders agreed to continue and increase meetings of diplomatic and military officials.

They agreed that there should be an early meeting of the Working Mechanism on Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China border matters.

The External Affairs Minister reiterated that India-China relations are best in keeping with the three principles of mutuality, mutual sensitivities and mutual interests.

The two ministers also exchanged views on the global situation.

The External Affairs Minister extended support to India's Foreign Minister Wang for China's presidency of the SCO next year.
