The cost of the vegetarian thali increased due to an increase of 30 per cent, 46 per cent and 59 per cent in prices of tomatoes, onions and potatoes respectively, mainly due to the low base of the previous financial year.

“Tomatoes, onions and potatoes have been major contributors to this growth as adverse weather conditions have impacted their supplies,” said Pushan Sharma, director-research, CRISIL Market Intelligence & Analytics.

Going forward, due to the high base of the last financial year, when tomato prices had increased, thali prices are expected to be lower year-on-year.

"However, sequentially, tomato prices will rise before rising towards the end of August as fresh supplies come in from southern and western states," Sharma said.

According to the CRISIL report, low arrivals of onion due to sharp decline in Rabi acreage, decline in potato crop yield due to unseasonal rains in March and high temperatures in key growing areas have led to virus infection in the summer tomato crop. Due to which prices have increased. Tomato arrivals in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have declined by 35 percent year-on-year.

For non-veg thali, the cost reduction was due to an estimated decline of 14 per cent year-on-year in broiler prices over the high base of the previous financial year as well as oversupply conditions and lower feed costs year-on-year. However, the report said that the price of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis has increased by 6 percent and 4 percent respectively month-on-month.
