The Coal Ministry said, as a result of increased production, efficient management of logistics and smooth coordination with the Railways, it has ensured the largest ever stock of coal in thermal power plants.

This proactive initiative aims to secure uninterrupted power for citizens across the country during this peak demand period.

In the current financial year, demand for coal-based electricity has increased by 7.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

This is the highest demand for coal ever.

Till June 16, the cumulative coal production is 207.48 MT, showing an increase of 9.27 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year, which was 189.87 MT.Coal India Limited (CIL) has recorded coal production of 160.25 MT, which is 7.28 per cent higher than the same period last year which was 149.38 MT. Similarly, coal production from captive and commercial mines reached 33 MT, a growth of 27 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to data compiled by the ministry.

Cumulative coal dispatch till June 16, 2024 is 220.31MT, an increase of 7.65 per cent compared to the same period last year which was 204.65 MT.

This achievement is attributed to the efficient logistics system ensuring smooth and adequate supply of coal. The sub-group comprising representatives from the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Coal, Ministry of Railways and power generating companies has played an important role in maintaining an efficient supply chain. The total reserves of coal in the country (mines, transit, power plants) is more than 144.68 MT, which ensures adequate coal supply to the power sector.

The Railway Ministry has ensured an average increase of 10 per cent in the daily availability of railway rakes with an average supply of 428.40 rakes per day by June 16, 2024.

There has also been a significant increase in movement through coastal shipping.

Traditionally, coal was transported only through Paradip port, but now, under proper coordination as per the coal logistics policy, coal is also being transported through Dhamra and Gangavaram ports.

The infrastructural enhancement in the railway network has significantly improved the movement of rakes from Son Nagar to Dadri, resulting in more than 100 per cent improvement in turnaround time.
