On July 6, 2021, Kannaujiya, the then Circle Officer (CO) in Unnao, requested leave from the then Unnao Superintendent of Police (SP) due to family reasons.
Instead of going home, he reportedly stayed at a hotel near Kanpur with a lady constable and switched off his personal and official phones.
When his wife realized that his number was unreachable, she sought help from the Unnao SP, who discovered that the CO's mobile network was last active in a hotel in Kanpur. A police team reached the hotel and found both of them.
It was told that Unnao Police has taken video evidence related to the CO.
Later, the then Inspector General of Police (IGP), Lucknow Range, recommended strict action against him.
