Chandigarh, a deputy superintendent of police posted in Amritsar has been booked for allegedly supporting drug peddlers, an official said on Thursday.

Vavinder Kumar Mahajan was booked by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of Punjab Police, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav said here.

Yadav said DSP Mahajan was charged with corruption after an investigation revealed that he had allegedly been supporting drug suppliers through corrupt practices.

An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, highlighting the seriousness of the crimes committed and abuse of power, the DGP said.

The ANTF has taken decisive action against corruption within its own ranks after recent investigations into a case related to the seizure of 1.98 crore Alprazolam tablets and 40 kilograms of raw Alprazolam recorded in February 2024, revealed that Mahajan was involved in a bribery case.

Currently, Mahajan is posted in Amritsar.

The DGP said that during a joint inspection at a pharmaceutical company in May, the ANTF team found serious violations related to the NDPS Act.

"Preliminary investigation of this case revealed that DSP Mahajan had accepted a bribe of Rs 45 lakh from the pharmaceutical company to protect him from legal consequences," he said.

Sharing more details, ANTF Special DGP Kuldeep Singh said that after two vital witnesses gave voluntary statements before the judicial officer and were corroborated by financial and technical evidence exposing the misconduct of the accused DSP Mahajan, the ANTF decided to take legal action. against the latter.

The ANTF team carried out a raid at the residence of the accused DSP in Amritsar, but he could not be arrested and is absconding, he said, adding that further investigation is underway.
