Imphal, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday said drug trafficking cases have declined to some extent in the state as the hill and valley people and security forces have supported the administration in its effort to address the issue. .

He also claimed that as per satellite data mapping, poppy cultivation in the state has also decreased by 50-60 percent.

Singh called for eliminating the drug menace in the state.

"With the active support of hill village heads, valley-based civil societies and security personnel, drug trafficking has reduced to some extent in the state...even poppy cultivation as per satellite data mapping has declined by 50-60%. The percentage has decreased." He said this at an event organized here on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Manipur was badly affected by the drug menace in the 1990s and the rate of HIV positive cases was then the highest in the country, he said.

Singh also said that his government has launched a war against drug abuse and several smugglers and individuals linked to international cartels have been arrested.

The Chief Minister flagged off a bike rally from his Secretariat to observe the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
