New Delhi [India], The Delhi High Court has sought response from the Secretary of Bar Council of India (BCI) and Dean Student Welfare of Delhi University and others on a plea seeking direction to Delhi University to provide clean and safe drinking water. As well as other basic facilities including availability of Wi-Fi services.

A bench of Justice Amit Sharma, in an order passed on June 12, 2024, said that notice be issued to the Secretary of the Bar Council of India and the Dean of Students Welfare of Delhi University by all permissible means.

Meanwhile, the court has also appointed lawyer Rajesh Mishra as amicus curiae in this case.

The Court further directed that it is necessary that a meeting be convened between all the stakeholders, i.e., Dean Student Welfare, University of Delhi, Dean Faculty of Law, the petitioner and the amicus curiae appointed by this Court to assess the facilities provided to the Go. In respect of other infrastructure facilities including provision of water coolers/pure drinking water as well as availability of Wi-Fi services to the students.

"The meeting be convened with mutual convenience of the parties within 01 week and the counsel appearing on behalf of the respondents shall coordinate with the above stakeholders and a report in respect of the same shall be placed on record before the next date of hearing. Roster of the Bench List before 04.07.2024,” it added.

This direction of the court came while hearing the petition of three students studying in the law faculty, Raunak Khatri, Umesh Kumar and Ankur Singh Mavi.

However, it was submitted and on instructions by counsel for the respondent, it was submitted that necessary provisions are in existence with respect to water coolers/drinking water.
