Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 53.64 lakh cigarettes of foreign brands with an estimated street value of Rs 8.04 crore from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and arrested two people, including the mastermind of the smuggling syndicate.

Acting on inputs, DRI officials conducted simultaneous searches at multiple premises run by a syndicate allegedly involved in smuggling of cigarettes and other contraband items, a DRI Mumbai zonal unit official said on Sunday.

"The operation resulted in the seizure of 53.64 lakh foreign brand cigarettes worth Rs 8.04 crore," he said.

He said the mastermind of the syndicate and his associate have been arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act.

The officer said that DRI has busted many such syndicates in the past also.
