The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) will collaborate with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar for artificial intelligence (AI)-driven surveillance and other projects, officials said.

A meeting was held between officials of DRDO and IIT Bhubaneswar here on Tuesday, the meeting was attended by Director General (DG) of Electronics and Communication Systems (ECS Cluster, DRDO) Binay Das and several senior scientists and officials of both the institutes.

During the meeting, nine approved projects of DRDO's ECS cluster were handed over to IIT Bhubaneswar, while another 7 projects are in the process of being approved with a funding of Rs 18 crore.

Officials said IIT Bhubaneswar will work on sanctioned projects which will be beneficial in electronics warfare, AI-powered surveillance, power systems, radar systems etc.

SR Samantarai, head of IIT's School of Electrical Sciences, said the collaboration between IIT Bhubaneswar and DRDO will contribute to the emerging research and development needs of defense applications, thereby creating a platform for 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.He said this form of collaboration will enhance the sustainability of defense research programs and will be part of the ecosystem for nation building.

Speaking on the occasion, Binay Das advised researchers and faculty members associated with various DRDO-sanctioned projects to work systematically with proper review and risk management systems to complete the projects on time and bring unique solutions.

He said that DRDO is going through a transformation from technology chaser to technology enabler and trendsetter.

“The aim now goes beyond achieving self-reliance to setting exemplary standards for the Indian Armed Forces, and for others around the world. In this context, this is another opportunity for collaboration, and setting up centers of excellence at the IITs.“Bhubaneswar will prove important,” he said.
