New Delhi, The Department of Telecommunications has directed telecom operators to investigate over 6 lakh mobile connections obtained using illegal, non-existent or fake documents. This information was given in an official statement on Thursday.

DoT has issued instructions to telecom operators to immediately re-verify the identified mobile numbers within 60 days.

"DOT has identified around 6.80 lakh mobile connections which are suspected to be obtained using invalid, non-existent or fake and forged Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) KYC documents," the statement said. " ,

The department has flagged around 6.80 lakh mobile connections as potentially fraudulent after advanced AI-powered analysis.

"The doubtful authenticity of the POI/POA KYC documents suggests the use of fake documents to obtain these mobile connections. DoT has issued instructions to the TSPs to immediately re-verify these identified mobile numbers. All TSPs It is mandatory to re-verify the flag connection within 60 days, failure to complete the re-verification will result in the concerned mobile number being disconnected.

In April, DoT had marked 10,834 suspicious mobile numbers for re-verification. Of these, 8,272 mobile connections were disconnected after failing re-verification.
