Manjhi, founder of Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), won from Gaya Lok Sabha constituency of Bihar in the 2024 elections. He served as the Chief Minister of Bihar from May 2014 to February 2015.

Manjhi has been associated with various political parties including Congress, erstwhile Janata Dal, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Janata Dal (United).Manjhi was born in Khizarsarai, Gaya and became a Congress MLA in 1980. He became the Chief Minister of Bihar in 2014 when Nitish Kumar stepped down to consolidate the Janata Dal (United).

Following the rift with Nitish Kumar, Manjhi suffered a setback in the 2015 assembly elections as his party could secure only one seat. Before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, his party joined the grand alliance with RJD and Congress. But in that election the alliance lost due to the strong Modi wave.

Earlier he was the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Welfare Minister in Nitish Kumar's cabinet.Between 1996 and 2005, he served in the RJD government led by Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi.
