New Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday said measures to tackle climate change should not be used to justify arbitrary trade restrictions.

Addressing the plenary session of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Russia, he cautioned that the tendency to take unilateral action is justified as environmental actions are impacting trade, violating World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and international law. Is weakening.

Noting that sustainable development includes environmental protection, Birla, who is leading an Indian parliamentary delegation at the forum, felt it was important to achieve the goal in a similar manner given the different economic development levels of different countries.

The Indian Parliament is committed to deepening engagement with parliamentarians from other countries, he said.

The Lok Sabha Speaker underlined that India, despite resource limitations, has been consistent in taking strong action towards environmental sustainability.

He said India has exceeded its targets to reduce emissions intensity, increase non-fossil fuel power capacity and create additional carbon sinks, as promised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

According to an official statement, Birla felt that climate issues should be addressed within the UNFCCC framework.

Highlighting the need for reform of global bodies, he stressed that reform of global bodies is necessary to reflect contemporary realities. He also felt that the recent expansion of BRICS presented a unique opportunity.
