The Delhi-based man was suffering from heaviness and distension (swelling) on the right side of his abdomen, something he noticed just two weeks ago.

He was surprisingly fit and had no abdominal pain or discomfort, loss of appetite, loss of body weight or weakness.

An investigation by doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital revealed a very large abdominal mass on the right side of the abdomen.

They also reported a large, predominantly fat mass with multiple enhancing soft tissue components and septa displacing the right kidney and liver upward and the adjacent pancreas and loops of small intestine toward the left end of the abdomen.

The large intestine was extended over the mass for its entire length. His right ureter was also pushed up and toward the left side of his abdomen, causing his right kidney to swell. This mass was also very close to the inferior vena cava.

The findings suggested a retroperitoneal liposarcoma (a malignant tumor), the doctors said, which the doctors removed in a surgery that lasted 8 hours.

“The successful surgery lasted 8 hours. It was a huge task, we were able to preserve all vital organs like right kidney and large intestine by meticulous dissection and separating the tumor from vital structures like duodenum, pancreas and ureter,” Dr Manish K Gupta, Vice President. and Senior General and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

"The vascular surgery team played a critical role in separating the tumor mass from the inferior vena cava, which was densely adherent to it, and then handed over to the surgical team for complete removal of the tumor mass," he added.

“A large retroperitoneal mass measuring 37 X 23 X 16 cm and weighing 7.5 kg was removed and sent for biopsy. Any tumor larger than 30 cm falls into the category of giant retroperitoneal mass and is quite rare,” the doctor explained.

The patient was discharged after seven days of surgery and is now doing well, he said.
