Alappuzha (Kerala), State Health Minister Veena George said here on Friday that doctors are not allowed to do private practice under the Directorate of Medical Education in Kerala and action is being taken against those doing so.

Speaking to reporters, George said that the matter has come to the notice of the government and it is taking necessary interventions to resolve the problem.

The minister said that doctors are not allowed to do private practice under the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and hence, they are given non-practicing allowance for the same.

“Therefore, anyone doing private practice is doing something illegal,” he said.

George said that many medical colleges had serious problems with doctors not using the punch-in system of attendance and in this case proper investigation was done to find out whether the medical professionals were on leave or simply absent.

The minister said, based on the findings of the investigation, appropriate and strict intervention has been taken by the government.

“Doctors in the field of medical education and under DME are not allowed to do private practice,” he stressed.
