New Delhi, Delhi government's Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) arrested a driver and booked a junior jal board engineer for allegedly demanding bribe to clear outstanding bills of Rs 30 lakh from the owner of a water tanker, officials said Thursday.

Joint Commissioner of Police (ACB) Madhur Verma said the driver, identified as Niranjan, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant, a tanker owner from Mandawali, in the East Delhi.

Verma said this is the first case registered by the ACB under the new law.

Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023. Teams are conducting raids to nab Delhi Jal Board junior engineer Sandeep Shekhar, he said.

During preliminary interrogation, Niranjan said that he demanded the bribe at the instance of Shekhar instead of clearing the complainant's outstanding Rs 30 lakh for water tankers that he had rented from him since 2022, Verma said.

Verma said that when the complainant visited Shekhar and asked him to clear the bills, the officer asked him to meet Niranjan.

When the complainant met Niranjan, he allegedly demanded illegal gratuity of 10 per cent of the total outstanding bills, Verma said.

As part of the assurance, he got the invoices of around Rs 14 lakh and told the complainant to pay Rs 1.4 lakh before approving the remaining invoices, the officer said.

Aggrieved, the complainant went to the Anti-Corruption Unit, which set a trap to catch the accused.

The trap was executed following the provisions of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, including section 105 (the scope of audio and video recording during search and seizure) and the entire process was recorded, Verma said.

He said this is the first case under the BNSS recorded by the ACB since it came into force in the country.
