New Delhi, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Wednesday said discussions on AI rules are ongoing and political consensus will be required.

The IT and Electronics Minister further said that all sections of the society should fully understand the threats and potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

"...Only then should we take legal action," he told reporters on the sidelines of the 'Global India AI Summit'.

Asked about India's timeline for preparing regulation and guardrails on AI, the minister said while discussions are ongoing, political consensus will be required.

"Discussions are ongoing...it requires political consensus," he said.

Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasad stressed that India stands at the forefront of AI innovation.

"As the Council Chair of the Global Partnership on AI, India is strengthening its commitment to advance and democratize AI and its associated benefits in an ethical and responsible manner," he said.

Prasad said India's vision is to "make AI in India" and "make AI work for India".

He called for collaborative efforts to develop AI solutions to solve problems and challenges in key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture and education.
