New Delhi: Digi Yatra is likely to be launched at 14 more airports by the end of this month and efforts are on to make the feature more user-friendly with some changes in the architecture, according to a top executive.

Based on Facial Recognition Technology (FRT), Digi Yatra provides contactless, seamless movement of passengers across various checkpoints at the airport and currently, it has around 5 million users.

This facility is now available at 14 airports for domestic passengers and discussions are underway with various stakeholders to make it available for international passengers as well.

Digi Yatra Me is expected to be available at 14 more airports by the end of April, said Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation.

The Foundation, a non-profit organisation, is the nodal agency for Digi Yatra which was launched in December 2022.The 14 new airports where this facility is to be launched soon are Bagdogra, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dabolim, Indore, Mangalore, Patna Raipur, Ranchi, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram and Visakhapatnam.

While Digi Yatra is slowly gaining momentum, concerns have been raised in various sectors regarding the privacy of passengers' data.

Trying to allay the concerns, Khadakbhavi said that Digi Yatra does not have passenger data.

"The data resides only on (the user's) phone and is under the control of the passenger," he said in an interview.

The data shared by the traveler to Digi Yatra is stored in an encrypted format. To avail the service, the passenger has to register his/her details on the Digi Yatra app using Aadhaar-based verification and a self-image capture. In the next step, the boarding pass has to be scanned and the credentials have to be shared with the airport.

At the airport e-gate, the passenger must first scan the bar-coded boarding pass and the facial recognition system installed at the e-gate will validate the passenger's identity and travel document. Once this process is completed, the passenger can enter the airport through e-gate.

The passenger will have to follow the normal procedure to clear the security before boarding the aircraft.Personnel at airports have been instructed to admit passengers only with their informed consent.

Khadakbhavi said work is being done to ensure a more user-friendly experience for Digi Yatra users and the focus is on changes to the overall architecture. He said that discussions are going on with the Ministry of External Affairs and other agencies to provide facilities for international travel.

The shareholders of the foundation are the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Kochi International Airport Limited (CIAL), Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL) and Mumbai International Airport Limited.
