Speaking to reporters at an event related to World Environment Day 2024 organized under the Brand Bengaluru initiative at Cubbon Park, Shivakumar said that Bengaluru should be transformed into Green Bengaluru.

He said, "We are in agreement with all schools, colleges and institutions. Every student will have to take the responsibility of a sapling. They should maintain and take care of the sapling in their respective areas. The saplings should have their names.,

"School students have so far planted 52,000 saplings as part of the Hasiru Rakshak programme. We will tie up with more schools and ensure that two lakh saplings are planted this year. Our survival depends on the green cover. Saplings tomorrow are trees." Trees ensure rain and we need water to survive, I am glad you are a part of this environment protection activity.,

Shivakumar said that the city's founder Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda had no idea that Bengaluru would become so big. "Bengaluru is growing rapidly on all fronts. Our ancestors had ensured green cover in Bengaluru and it is our responsibility to continue this legacy. Hence we have started the Hasiru Rakshak programme. The temperature in Bengaluru rarely crosses 28 degrees. Used to be, but now it has crossed 36 degrees. Our government has set aside Rs 310 crore for greening Bengaluru city under various departments. The 15th Finance Commission has also allocated Rs 100 crore for environmental protection in Bengaluru. School students should plant and nurture saplings with utmost care so that our future is safe," she said.

He said that due to lack of rain in the state, about 200 taluks faced severe drought and Bengaluru was also facing water shortage. “Programmes like Hasiru Rakshak will ensure that such droughts do not occur in future,” he said."
