New Delhi, Women and Child Development Department of Delhi Government has taken over the management of women's helpline number 181, which was earlier handled by Delhi Commission for Women.

Calls started coming in on helpline number 181 in the control room from 4.58 pm on Wednesday evening. A total of 1,024 calls were received on the helpline till 2 pm on Thursday.

Delhi Women and Child Development Minister Kailash Gehlot said, "Women Helpline 181 has resumed its operations under the ambit of WCD as a strong support system for women in Delhi. Our aim is to ensure that every Calls should be handled with utmost care and women in distress should receive timely and effective assistance.

"The Delhi government is committed to addressing the issues of violence, abuse and other concerns faced by women, strengthening our dedication towards their safety and well-being," he said.

Earlier, the helpline was managed by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). However, according to a letter written to the Chief Secretary on May 4 last year, following a directive from the Central Government, the responsibility has now been transferred to the Women and Child Development Department of the Delhi government.

Women's helpline number 181 receives around 40,000 calls every month. It is a toll-free, 24-hour telecommunications service that provides support and information to women seeking help.
