A vacation bench of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice KV Vishwanathan asked Himachal Pradesh to release surplus water on June 7 by giving prior notice to Haryana.

The bench said that Haryana should not hinder the flow of water from Himachal to Delhi, but should facilitate it.

The top court said, “Considering the urgency, we direct Himachal Pradesh to release 137 cusecs of water from upstream so that the water reaches Hathnikund barrage and reaches Delhi via Wazirabad.The surplus water will be released tomorrow by the state of Himachal Pradesh with prior notice. The state of Haryana will facilitate the flow of water from Hathnikund to Wazirabad so that it reaches Delhi without any interruption and residents can get drinking water.

The bench has sought a status report in this regard by Monday.

Amid water shortage in the national capital, the Delhi government had approached the Supreme Court to urgently get additional water from neighboring state Haryana.

The Delhi government said in its petition that it was compelled to file the petition due to the severe water shortage being faced by the people of Delhi due to the ongoing scorching heat in North India, especially Delhi.

“Direct the respondent No. 1 (Haryana) to immediately and continuously release water at Wazirabad Barrage,” the petition said.,

It said record-high temperatures and heat waves in Delhi have led to maximum temperatures rising to nearly 50 degrees Celsius at some places, leading to extraordinary and excessive increase in water demand in the city.

The petition said that as a result, the national capital is suffering from water shortage, leading to frequent supply cuts in many parts of NCT Delhi and disrupting the daily life of common residents.

It further said, "The Government of NCT Delhi has taken all administrative measures to ensure optimization, rationing and targeted supply of water in the national capital; yet, water scarcity remains acute and it is clear from all indicators that “National Capital Territory of Delhi is in dire need of additional water.”

It said that to deal with this unexpected demand during the summer months, the Delhi government has already devised a solution to meet the increasing demand for water in the national capital - the state of Himachal Pradesh, by sharing its surplus water. Has agreed to do. With Delhi.
