New Delhi: Nearly 16 lakh people have signed pledges to vote in the general elections as part of the Delhi poll body's initiative to boost electoral participation, it said on Sunday.

Launched recently, the 'Sankalp Patra' initiative is led by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and targeted schools under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council.

"The Sankalp Patra, a pledge form, was distributed to students, who brought it to their parents to sign to vote," the Election Commission said in a statement.

The initiative received an overwhelming response from parents in public schools, the statement said.

"So far, approximately 1.6 million signed commitments have been collected to participate in the upcoming elections on May 25," the election body said.

This approach took advantage of the influential role of children in motivating civic engagement within their families.

Lauding the initiative, Delhi CEO P Krishnamurthy highlighted the important role of educational institutions in fostering a culture of democratic participation from an early age.

As Delhi prepares for elections, the initiative aims to promote voting and inculcate civic duty by involving students in the democratic process, the statement said.

Voting for seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital is to be held on May 25.
