New Delhi, Delhi Police has written to the CBI seeking information through Interpol channels about fake bomb threat e-mails sent to more than 150 schools in the National Capital Region (NCR). Officials gave this information on Thursday.

He said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), also known as the designated National Central Bureau of India and Interpol India, is responsible for all communication and coordination with Interpol.

Officials said the agency can send information sought by Delhi Police to Interpol, which will send it to all member law-enforcement agencies around the world.

Delhi Police is investigating the IP address used to send the e-mail along with the sender and source of the mail to understand the conspiracy and motive behind the fake threat which resulted in panic in Delhi-NCR on Wednesday. .The mail, allegedly sent from the mail.ru server, claimed that explosives had been planted on the school premises, triggering a massive evacuation and search as panicked parents rushed to collect their children. The threat that alarm bells were set off at security establishments was later ruled out as a hoax as nothing incriminating was found from the premises.

Officials said preliminary investigation has suspected a "deep conspiracy" hatched by a terrorist group during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, adding that the threat mail may have been sent by an ISIS module.

Delhi Police suspects that the mail was sent using a VPN and the dark web – an encrypted online content platform that allows individuals to hide their identity and location from others.

An official said a case has been registered by the Special Cell of Delhi Police under relevant legal provisions for crimes like conspiracy and intimidation and a dedicated team has been formed to investigate.
