New Delhi: DMRC headquarters, Metro Bhavan in Central Delhi received carbon neutral certification on World Environment Day, a statement said on Wednesday.

This milestone comes after Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's staff quarters in Noida Sector-50 were first certified as carbon neutral.

Metro Building received this certification from Earthwood, the world's leading verification and validation company in the carbon market. The Gurugram-based company operates from India, UK, Türkiye, UAE and Latin America.

According to the statement, this is an important step in the organization's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and tackling climate change. It said that in line with the government's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070, DMRC continues to work towards carbon neutrality by adopting and implementing advanced environmental practices.

The certification of the Metro building as carbon neutral for the financial year 2023-24 under the Public Accountability Standard (PAS) 2060 is a testament to these efforts, the statement said.

"DMRC has effectively reduced all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated from the metro building through various innovative and environment-friendly initiatives. These include installation of rain water harvesting (RWH) pits, a sewage treatment plant (STP) ), including use of treated waste water, water-efficient fixtures and an organic waste converter, these measures have significantly reduced the environmental footprint of the office, the DMRC said in the statement.Additionally, the Metro building has implemented several energy-efficient measures, such as installing energy-efficient appliances, a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) plant and energy metering systems, it said.

These initiatives have significantly reduced CO2 emissions from the building's energy consumption. Metro Bhavan has also achieved Gold rating from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

According to the statement, a target has been set to reduce the total energy consumption by five percent in the next year, with the aim of further reducing the energy intensity of the metro building.

DMRC is the first metro in the world to register for carbon credits with the UN body. This recent certification is another milestone in the ongoing journey towards environmental sustainability and operational excellence, the statement said.
