New Delhi [India], Delhi LG, VK Saxena, has praised the DDA (Delhi Development Authority) for its efforts in constructing the airport drainage, thanks to which, despite the recent record rain, the IGI airport remained free of waterlogging.

Immediately after taking over, LG took up the task of constructing the airport drain from IGI Airport to PWD Trunk Drain No. 2, on the south side of the airport, in mission mode. The airport suffered flooding even during last year's floods in the capital.

After the infamous flooding of the airport's runways and terminal in 2019, which brought it into international disrepute, IGIA approached the DDA, which in turn had started construction of the drainage connecting the airport to TD-2 in 2020. However, it was stuck due to the lack of permits from the GNCTD for more than two years.

After taking over, the LG had asked the DDA to move the Delhi High Court, which in turn had directed GNCTD to grant necessary permissions, which finally came in August 2022. Thereafter, the DDA worked in mission mode under the direct supervision of the LG. who visited the site 20 times, completed the works in a record time of 15 months, with the drainage inaugurated in December 2023.

In a recent review, the LG was informed that the drain flowed at its maximum capacity of 80 cumec on the day of the heavy downpour i.e. July 28, 2024, and successfully transported the discharged water from the airport and its neighboring areas. , which helped the LG The airport and areas remain free of waterlogging for the first time in several years.

A similar intervention by the DDA in east Delhi helped large areas in Trilokpuri and Mayur Vihar etc., prone to floods every year, remain largely flood-free this year. On his visit to the area last year, LG Saxena had tasked DDA to construct canals from the highway, from where water flowed to residential localities, to the DDA-owned Sanjay lake in the neighbourhood. He had also asked for large pipes to be laid by making big holes in the boundary wall of the neighboring residential areas, to ensure that water flows from these areas to the Sanjay Lake.

This served the dual purpose of not only draining water from areas that suffered from flooding for years, but also recharging the Sanjay Lake with fresh rainwater.

Similarly, around TD-2 and Airport Drain, the DDA has created five water bodies to absorb water from overflowing drains. Sector 8 in Dwarka, which is also supposed to be connected to the airport drain so that water from the area is channeled towards TD-2, will soon receive relief from floods, once the ongoing work is completed sooner than expected. scheduled for August of this year. year.

The LG underlined that the persistent problem of flooding in the national capital can be effectively resolved by addressing drainage problems with little effort, and experiments on airport drainage and around Sanjay Lake in east Delhi had shown that it could be achieve the same through proactive intervention by the Government and other concerned agencies.
