New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday rejected the plea of ​​former Popula Front of India (PFI) president E Abubakar seeking his release in the UAPA case being investigated by the NIA.

Abubakar, who was arrested by the anti-terrorism agency during a massive crackdown on the banned organization in 2022 and is in judicial custody, approached the High Court after the trial court refused the relief. He approached the trial court seeking interim bail on medical grounds.

"We dismiss the appeal," a bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain said while delivering the judgement.

Abubakar sought his release on both merit and medical grounds.According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), officials and members of the Popular Front of India (PFI) hatched a criminal conspiracy to raise funds to carry out terror acts in different parts of the country and organized training camps to indoctrinate people. Abubakar was arrested on September 22, 2022.The arrests were made in states and union territories including Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Delhi and Rajasthan.

The government banned PFI and several of its affiliates for five years on September 28, 2022, under the stringent anti-terrorism law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), accusing them of having links with global terrorist groups like ISIS. Was accused. ,

In February, the High Court had directed the medical superintendent of Tiha Jail to ensure "effective" treatment for Abubakar on a regular basis.
