New Delhi: The Delhi government's flagship scheme, the Mukhyamantri Teerth Yatra Yojana, will soon restart with senior citizens going on pilgrimage to Puri and Tirupati, officials said on Thursday.

The scheme was put on hold due to the model code of conduct imposed ahead of the Lok Sabha elections held in June.

Under the scheme run by the Pilgrimage Development Committee of the Delhi government, citizens aged 60 years and above are sent on free pilgrimages across the country along with one attendant.

Kamal Bansal, chairman of the Pilgrimage Development Committee, said, "The plan was disrupted due to the Model Code of Conduct. It is likely to resume from the last week of July or the first week of August with plans for trains to Puri and Tirupati. Is."

He said there was a huge demand from senior citizens to visit the Jagannath temple in Puri during the auspicious month of Shravan starting from July 22.

Bansal said that preparations have started to send the pilgrims to various places in coordination with the Railways.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had flagged off the 89th train for Dwarkadhish under the scheme before the elections in February. So far, more than 84,000 pilgrims have visited various religious places across the country under this scheme.

More than a dozen pilgrimage places including Rameshwaram, Shirdi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mathura, Vrindavan and Ayodhya are included under this scheme.

Officials said the scheme was started by the Kejriwal-led AAP government in 2019 with five pilgrimage sites and more were added later.
