New Delhi: Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer has sought from the city government a list of people kept in preventive custody in the national capital so that arrangements can be made for them to cast their votes in the Lok Sabha elections to be held here on May 25. The officers provided this information.

According to an official of the Delhi election body, they are yet to receive a response from the city government.

"About two weeks ago, we had written to the Home Department of the Delhi government seeking a list of preventive prisoners eligible to cast their votes. The Home Department oversees three jail complexes - Tihar, Rohini and Mandoli," an official said.

According to an official of the election body, preventive detainees are eligible to vote and arrangements for postal ballots have been made for them.

An official of Tihar Jail said that on an average 10 to 12 preventive prisoners are lodged in Tihar Jail.

"But it is difficult to say who will still be kept in jail at the time of voting. There is more than a month left for the elections and at this time, it is not possible to share the names of preventive detainees. That is why we have not shared These names are with the Delhi Election Commission."

Only preventive prisoners are allowed to vote, while other prisoners are not eligible to exercise the right to vote.
