New Delhi [India], A Delhi court has sentenced a man to 20 years in jail under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act for sexually assaulting a boy.

The court has awarded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the rehabilitation of the victim, who is now a college-going boy. In 2021, when the culprit committed unnatural sex with her, she was a 16-year-old minor.

The victim's father had lodged an FIR at Rajouri Garden police station.

Special Judge (POCSO) Preeti Parewa sentenced convict Mahendra to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under sections 6 and 12 of POCSO and IPC and imposed a fine of Rs 52000.

Additionally, the man was also convicted under Section 66E (punishment for breach of confidentiality) of the Information and Technology (IT) Act.

While sentencing the convicts, the court said, “The objective of the criminal justice system is not only to achieve catharsis by giving proportionate punishment to the offender but also to permanently rehabilitate the physically and mentally traumatized victim.

It says, "If we fail to do so, we are abdicating our duty to the victim, whose psychological well-being is denied and this may have long-term consequences."

The case was filed on February 11, 2021, by the father of the victim boy, alleging that the convict had sodomized his son and also took photographs of the victim. On the basis of this complaint, a case was registered under sections of POCSO, IPC and IT Act.
