New Delhi, A court here on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on an accused for causing an adjournment by not ensuring "adequate arrangements" for his appearance through video conferencing (VC).

Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala was hearing a riot case registered by Khajuri Khas police station when the prosecution was in the stage of presenting its evidence.

The court said the examination of a Delhi Police officer was postponed because accused Sarfaraz chose to appear through VC, but his video was not working.

It added that despite waiting for Sarfaraz's proper appearance, the video was not playing continuously and the accused said that "the network on his side was not good".

"The Delhi High Court has allowed the appearance of any litigant through the VC, but that does not mean that it will be a frivolous appearance," the court said.

It says, "Once a litigant or an advocate chooses to appear through VC, it is his responsibility to ensure adequate arrangements for the appearance through VC, without any interruption in the video and audio. Should be without."

The court expressed its dissatisfaction and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on the accused "for delaying the adjournment".

The case has been posted for further proceedings on May 8.
