New Delhi: BJP leaders and workers on Friday staged a protest against the AAP government near the Delhi Secretariat over the "tariff hike" of power in the city.

BJP workers, along with representatives of Resident Welfare Associations (RWA), also burnt copies of electricity bills and demanded that the increase in power purchase adjustment charge (PPAC) be revoked.

Addressing the protesters, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said the Kejriwal government increased the PPAC without touching the unit cost of electricity for political gain.

He claimed that it was Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who brought the PPAC to Delhi. The PPAC was only 1.7 percent in 2015 and has now risen to 46 percent, he said.

Meter charges and load surcharge have also tripled during Kejriwal's 10-year rule, he claimed.

PPAC is a surcharge to cover fluctuations in power purchase costs incurred by failures. This year saw an increase from 6.15 percent to 8.75 percent.

BJP MPs Yogendra Chandolia and Kamaljeet Sehrawat, former MP Ramesh Bidhuri, party unit general secretary Vishnu Mittal and BJP MPs Vijender Gupta, Mohan Singh Bisht, Abhay Verma and Anil Bajpayi also participated in the protest.

The increase in electricity tariff has put the people of Delhi in financial difficulties. The BJP will continue to fight for the rights of the people of Delhi, Chandolia said.

The protesters tried to march towards the Delhi Secretariat from Shaheedi Park in ITO, but were stopped by the police. Some protesters, including Sachdeva, were detained when they tried to pass the police barricade.

The arrested protesters were taken to the IP Estate police station and later released with a warning, according to a Delhi BJP statement.

Earlier, Power Minister Atishi had claimed that the BJP was spreading rumors about increasing electricity tariffs.
