"The maximum temperature in Delhi-NCR ranged between 45.2 degrees to 49.1 degrees Celsius in different parts of the city, with Mungeshpur recording 52.9 degrees Celsius, compared to other stations. This could be due to an error in the sensors or the local factor," the IMD said. "IMD is examining the data and sensors," it said in a statement.

Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju had earlier posted on Twitter that the temperature was not official.

Kiren Rijiju wrote, "The probability of a temperature of 52.3°C in Delhi is very low. Our senior officials at IMD have been asked to confirm the news report. The official position will be communicated soon."

IMD Director General M Mahapatra said the temperature seemed unusual compared to other stations. A team has been sent to AWS to investigate the data.

The Safdarjung center reading, considered the official temperature of Delhi, was 46.8 degrees Celsius.

AWSes are automated weather stations where observations are broadcast automatically. No other AWS including Pragati Maidan, IGNOU Ayanagar, Pitampura, Najafgarh reported 50+ temperatures on Wednesday.

"Today i.e. May 29, 2024, the maximum temperature in Delhi has dropped at some places compared to yesterday. It has rained at many places in Delhi, resulting in further drop in temperature. Gradually the heat wave will subside during the next 2 days. According to an IMD statement, there will be a drop in temperatures with the incoming western disturbance, rain/thunderstorm and south-westerly wind blowing from the Arabian Sea towards northwest India.
