New Delhi: Three people have been arrested for allegedly extorting money and jewelery from a naval officer's wife by posing as sadhus and threatening her with a dummy snake in Delhi's RK Puram area, police said on Tuesday.

Police said the accused have been identified as Debu Nath (20), Vinod Kamat (45) and Rajende Sharma (50).

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Rohit Meena said that on April 5, the accused, posing as sadhus, snatched money and jewelery from the wife of a naval officer near African Avenue Road.

The accused first asked her to keep money in a metal vessel for blessings, the DC said.

“As soon as the complainant did so, the accused threatened to kill her and snatched her gold platinum ring which she was wearing.Following the complaint, an FIR was registered and further investigation was conducted,” the DCP said.

He said that the police studied the modus operandi of the accused and traced them.

"The team checked more than 100 CCTV cameras at the entry and exit routes. After continuous checking of the CCTV cameras, the team found the registration number of the auto-rickshaw, which was found to be registered in the name of Sunita Devi. During interrogation he said He had given it on rent to one accused Kamat,” he said.He said that during the investigation, the police came to know that Nath and his associates used to cheat people by showing fake snakes in public places.

During interrogation, Kamat told the police that a few days ago the accused had taken his auto rickshaw on permanent rent from me for Rs 800 from 8 am to 2 pm. Meena said, H used to pick them from Shakurpur Basti in West Delhi and drop them at different places, where they would commit crimes.
