By Shalini Bhardwaj New Delhi [India], A 13-year-old girl lying in a coma made a "miraculous" recovery after a liver transplant at New Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. A few years ago, Radha was suffering from liver failure. She was diagnosed with the rare Wilson's disease, and since then, she has battled excessive accumulation of copper in her organs, particularly her liver, after hepatitis A dealt a fatal blow to her already damaged liver, causing Radha suffered serious long-term life failure. As his illness worsened at an alarming rate, the body became like a battlefield. His jaundice, along with high levels of bilirubin (44), was a clear sign of liver damage.The PICU team at a private hospital in Delhi began intensive efforts to save Radha's life. The family was advised to consider liver transplantation as a life-saving option. Inspired by her mother's immense love, Radha's mother bravely decided to undergo a liver transplant. Wadwa, the PICU team under the guidance of Dr. Anil Sachdeva, Dr. Dhiren Gupta, Dr. Neeraj Gupta and Dr. Nishan, senior consultant pediatrician at Sir Gang Ram Hospital, fought tirelessly to stabilize the 13-year-old girl. His mother was included as a donor in a twelve-hour long procedure led by Dr Ushast Dheer, Chairman of Live Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, showing her steadfast resolve.Medical science was an excellent work of precision and ability. Radha opened her eyes on the second day after liver transplant. Despite all odds, the transplant was successful and Radha's weakened body got a new lease of life. She has recovered very well and is now back home with her siblings and getting ready to go back to school after the summer holidays. Dr. Naresh Bansal, senior consultant, Institute of Liver Gastroenterology and Pancreas Biliary Sciences, said, "Wilson's disease is a genetic disease; so what is it? The girl came to us 7 years ago, she had liver problems, swelling in the stomach and leg pain. There was swelling in my stomach, so when we saw and examined him, we found out that he had copper in his body, after that he suddenly got viral hepatitis.His condition worsened. Whatever happened to her in the late stages of cirrhosis, we tried to revive her by bandaging and sedating her, but eventually she got infected. A ventilator. We treated her infection with antibiotics and later when she reached such a critical condition that we felt she could not survive without a transplant, we transferred her to Dr. Ushast Dhir, Director of Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at C. Ganga Ram Hospital mentioned that it was the toughest case to make this transplant successful for the youngest patient suffering from Wilson's disease. It was difficult to convince the family about the importance of a liver transplant, which was the only way to save his life.Dr. Dhir further added, “The child was critical and a living donor live transplant had to be done in the right window. This was made possible by the exemplary hard work and impeccable coordination between the multidisciplinary super specialty teams at the hospital."
