New Delhi: The Defense Ministry has started the process to procure 156 light combat helicopters from state-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) at a cost of about Rs 45,000 crore, officials said on Tuesday.

He said that a request for proposal (RFP) or preliminary tender has been issued by the ministry for the procurement project.

Separately, HAL informed BSE Ltd in a filing that RFP has been issued by the ministry for the procurement of 156 light combat helicopters.

Last November, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) had approved the proposal to purchase 156 Prachanda attack helicopters.

Of the 156 Prachanda Light Combat Helicopters, 90 will be for the Army and 66 for the Indian Air Force.

Officials said the contract value of the acquisition is expected to be around Rs 45,000 crore which will include technical support, maintenance and repairs.

Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the 5.8 tonne twin-engined LCH is equipped with various weapon systems and is capable of destroying enemy tanks, bunkers, drones and other assets in high altitude areas.

The helicopter has modern stealth features, strong armor protection and formidable night attack capability, and is fully capable of operating even in Siachen, the world's highest battlefield.
