Hyderabad, In a case of mistaken identity of a dead person, a man turned up alive at his "funeral" in Vikarabad district of Telangana, where his family and relatives were making arrangements for burial after being informed about his death.

The incident took place at Navandgi village in Basheerabad mandal of Vikarabad district, a Government Railway Police (GRP) official said on Tuesday.

The man P Yellappa, (40), a daily wage laborer was presumed dead after his family members were informed of his death when a body was found with a mobile phone.

The GRP personnel found the body of an unidentified person on the tracks of Vikarabad railway station on the night of June 22, with his head crushed and beyond recognition, the official said.

A mobile phone was found near the body and police officers called relatives from it, who reported that it belonged to Yellappa.

Yellappa's wife and his relatives arrived at the Vikarabad government hospital on June 23 and "identified" the body as that of Yellappa, the official said.

After an autopsy, relatives handed over the body and took it to his town.

While the family and relatives were making arrangements for the burial, some villagers informed them in the afternoon that they had seen Yellappa alive in Tandur town of the district.

Meanwhile, Yellappa also returned home to the surprise of family members.

Yellappa's relatives immediately informed the GRP, who reached the village, brought the body and kept it at the Vikarabad government hospital mortuary, the official said, adding that the deceased man has not been identified so far.

The GRP also examined Yellappa and told them that he had left home as part of work and that someone stole his phone while he was sleeping at a bus stop in Tandur on June 20.

His relatives told police that Yellappa used to return home about a week after being away for work, the official said.

As for the unidentified man, police said he was hit by a train while crossing the tracks at the railway station on June 22 and the GRP registered a case. More research was being done.
