New Delhi, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles on Wednesday said it plans to enter the domestic battery electric segment with the launch of the all-electric next-generation light duty truck eCanter in the next 6-12 months.

The all-new next-generation eCantar has its world premiere in Japan and Europe in the second half of 2022.

“The launch of the all-electric eCanter in India within the next 6 to 1 months is the first step in our long-term strategy to decarbonize our entire product portfolio,” said Satyaka Arya, MD & CEO, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV). Said in a statement.

However, the reality is that diesel ICEs and CO2 neutral propulsion technologies will continue to co-exist in the Indian market for the foreseeable future, he said.

“A long-term plan like ours depends on many complex external factors, some of which are availability of charging and refueling infrastructure, availability of green energy, cost parity and wide-scale customer acceptance,” Arya said.

Therefore, the company's initial focus with eCantar is to achieve customer acceptance as well as product and service excellence, he said.

“Over the next two decades, we will be in a stronger position with decarbonized transportation solutions and progress towards becoming a leader in sustainable transportation in India,” Arya said.

On how important a conducive policy framework is to ensure economic viability for customers, he said the adoption of carbon neutral vehicles is possible only when there is widespread consumer acceptance regarding changes in the total cost of ownership equations.

DICV is a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG of Germany.
